This Past Sunday Detective Jerry Thompson of the High Point Police Department joined us in our GPS (God Parents Students) class. He was informative by educating parents on the dangers of online activities of teenagers. Some of the topics that were covered were: social networks, sending photos, chat rooms, and online games.  You can listen to the entire teaching by clicking on the link below.

Here are some of the big takeaways:

1. Parents are the best protection-there are no better programs/softwares than Mom and Dad.

2. If you child has a facebook (or anything like this) then you should have their username and password.

3. Computers should be in family rooms if possible, if in a child’s room, the door is to remain open if they are using the internet.

4. Its not an invasion of privacy for you to know what they are doing online, its called being a parent and its your job.

5.  Children should avoid chat rooms (Yahoo chat room, etc) and having people they aren’t “friends” with become their friends (on sites like facebook).
